Why become a member?
Blackwell is unique compared to many modern clubs, as we will always have fewer than 200 full members. Despite this, we are proud of our reputation as a very social golf club, with the most important part of our club’s ethos being that “no one is left in the bar.” This culture has been ingrained in our history for decades, and the small, intimate membership creates a very different experience from other modern clubs around the country.
The benefits of a smaller membership mean we have plenty of capacity on the golf course, allowing our members almost unfettered access. While tee times can be booked on busier mornings, such as Saturdays (for those who wish to know when they’ll head out), this is by no means essential. A popular aspect of club life is arriving on a Saturday morning and arranging a game in the spike bar. This is something we actively encourage, along with lunch afterward, where a jacket and tie are required in the dining room.
The smaller membership also fosters greater intimacy and deeper relationships, where playing with different people throughout the year happens naturally. Events such as Presidents vs Captains, The McNair Medals, and the Figs vs Braves fixture provide excellent opportunities to meet more people and become integrated into club life.
Furthermore, as a club that encourages two-ball golf, pace of play is important to us. We believe the most enjoyable rounds of golf are completed in just over three hours, often including time for a drink in the spike bar at the turn. This makes foursomes golf very popular on our course, which is ideally suited to the format, offering a fantastic way for new members to get involved in club life. Fourball play is also available on all days except Saturdays, and our weekly fourball roll-up events during the week provide another great chance for new members to be introduced to the wider membership.
We enjoy regular competitive golf throughout the year, with events in all months. While social, there are ample opportunities for competition for players of most standards. We also have an extensive club fixture list, which is published annually, and members are encouraged to participate. Additionally, we offer a number of reciprocal arrangements with clubs around the world which are detailed below:
- Delamere Forest
- Hollinwell
- Luffenham Heath
- Royal Cape, Aus
Blackwell Ladies Golf Club:
To be populated by the ladies section.
Application Process:
All prospective members will require a proposer and seconder. In the scenario where you wish to apply, and do not know a member to either propose or second you for membership, our membership committee will arrange to meet, and find suitable sponsors.
Candidates will be invited to play golf with members of the committee, as well as meeting a number of other members. Following this, candidates will also be invited for a formal membership interview.
If you wish to register your interest for membership at Blackwell, please complete the attached form. For all full membership applications, please write an application letter to our club secretary, Adam Riddle.
